Have you ever wondered how frogs get their green color? Well, we’re going to tell you how, so be prepared for a little science lesson. A frog’s green color comes from three different layers of pigment cells (chromataphores) that stack up on top of each other. The bottom layer is made up of melanophores. They contain melanin, which has a dark brown or black appearance. The second layer consists of iridophores, which reflect light and produce a silvery, iridescent hue. When sunlight hits the iridophores in most green frogs, the color that is reflected back is blue. This color shines through the third layer and top layer—xanthophores, which contain yellowish pigment. Together, these three layers work together to give frogs their green color.
Here’s another fun fact about frogs and their sense of fashion (actually, survival). Frogs have the ability to change from bright green to dark brown, blending in with their environment and protecting themselves from predators. How’s that for fashion forward?
